FALL: History of Jewish Peoplehood (6:30-7:40)
What does Jewish peoplehood mean to you? Is there really one Jewish people? How have Jewish leaders tried to unify Jews, and how have Jews reacted? How have Jews interacted with the non-Jewish cultures around them? In this course, we will be looking at historical case studies addressing each of these questions in the ancient, medieval, and modern period.
SPRING: Holocaust History with Ryan Howlett (6:30-7:40)
This class will act as an overview and introduction to the Holocaust but also investigate major themes in Holocaust education using primary source materials and first-person testimonies. Lessons will include the following topics and histories: prewar Jewish life; origins of antisemitism and Nazi ideology; timeline of anti-Jewish policies; the ghettos; the Final Solution; Jewish resistance; rescuers and non-Jewish resistance; survivors, liberators, and perpetrators; collaborators, and bystanders.
Students will work in small groups in addition to completing an individual writing assignment over the duration of the term, as well as be responsible for presenting their work in a culminating presentation.
